Lateral Programs

Salary $50,835 - $75,240

  • The Norfolk Police Department is offering in-state lateral transfers. Lateral transfers will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis to determine required Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services objectives have been met. Lateral transfers will complete an abbreviated 5 week police academy and will be required to complete the Police Training Officer program.
  • Additional Requirements
    • Must be in good standing with current law enforcement agency.
    • Must be a U.S. citizen (born or naturalized).
    • Actively employed with at least two (2) years of consecutive active service as a certified patrol officer for a municipal, county, and/or state law enforcement agency

  • DD 214 (long form) (prior military applicants only)
  • Training records and transcripts from current department
  • Copy of warrant of appointment from current agency
  • W2 form from DCJS 
  • Police Officer Lateral applicants must submit all of the required documents listed above
  • There is no complete exemption or lateral for out of-state officers in Virginia. The Virginia Department of Criminal justice Services reviews applications for partial training waivers on a case-by-case basis based upon prior training and experience as a law enforcement officer.
  • An officer must have at least 5 years continuous service as a certified law enforcement officer to be eligible for a partial training waiver and be separated from law enforcement agency as a certified law enforcement officer for less than 2 years.
  • The Norfolk Police Department is offering in-state Jailor/Deputy Sheriff lateral transfers. Lateral Transfers will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis to determine required Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) objectives have been met. Lateral transfers will complete an abbreviated 4-month relaxed atmosphere police academy. Upon successful completion of the police academy, officers are required to complete the Police Training Officer program. All applicants are required to fill out a W2 form from DCJS to confirm objectives and requirements have been met to be eligible.
  • Additional Requirements
    • Must be 21 years of age at the time of graduation.
    • Must be in good standing with current law enforcement agency.
    • Must be a U.S. citizen (born or naturalized).
    • Actively employed with at least two (2) years of consecutive active service as a certified deputy sheriff for a county, and/or state sheriff’s department.
    • No jail officer terminated for cause is eligible for a waiver from DCJS.
    • No decertified jail officer is eligible for a waiver from DCJS.
